NEW YORK, NY — March 17, 2023 — The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY Med) announced today that their MD candidates will join medical school students throughout the country in learning where they have matched for their residencies. Match Day is run by the National Resident Matching Program, which releases results to applicants seeking residency positions in the United States.
“The CUNY School of Medicine trains a highly diverse pool of health care professionals, preparing them to deliver primary care and specialized medical treatment while working to eradicate long-standing systemic inequities in health care,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “Because CUNY students reflect the full diversity of our city and nation, they begin their residencies with an understanding of the cultural, social and economic factors that can influence health outcomes among traditionally underserved groups. We are very proud of these medical students and congratulate them on their placements.”
CUNY Med students will receive their match results in The City College of New York’s Great Hall at 12 p.m. on March 17 in front of their guests, colleagues, school’s faculty and staff, and alumni. Medical schools throughout the country participate in their own unique Match Day celebrations and traditions that often include colorful maps of the U.S. and student signs. CUNY Med will continue its Match Day tradition started last year by Dean Carmen Renée Green, MD. Students who choose to publicly announce where they have matched will write their name on a slip of paper and drop it into a fish bowl. As their names are drawn, students will come to the podium and share their match/placement with the audience. The last student, who has been waiting patiently and graciously, wins a cash prize donated by the faculty and staff.
“As New York City’s only public medical school, today’s MD Class of 2023 represents the next generation of Healers, Leaders, and Scholars who will help fulfill our mission to address educational and healthcare inequities in NYC and beyond, and to ensure representation in medicine,” said Carmen Renée Green, MD, Dean of CUNY School of Medicine. “Our multi-ethnic/multi-lingual students are as diverse as NYC. They demonstrate CUNY Med’s commitment to access and equity and our continued leadership in producing excellent medical professionals who are also underrepresented in medicine.”
The CUNY Med Match Day celebration is scheduled for March 17, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in The Great Hall at Shepard Hall (138th and Convent Avenue). Guests who are unable to attend in-person can join via the following Zoom link (Meeting ID: 845 0165 2393 and Passcode: 0000):

“Match Day is the culmination of our students’ intense commitment to their medical education and the reward for all of their hard work these past seven years,” said Victor Schwartz MD, DLFAPA, Senior Associate Dean for Wellness and Student Life at the CUNY School of Medicine. “It is a special day at CUNY Med that is filled with emotion as students reflect on all that our future medical healers and leaders have accomplished.”
