CCNY’s CUNY School of Medicine Dean Carmen Renee’ Green on Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s podcast Chasing Life

Dr. Carmen Renee’ Green, dean of the CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York, is on Chasing Life with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a podcast that focuses on approaching the new normal mindfully, finding a balance between self-care and productivity as well as talking to doctors and researchers about the surprising science behind how one can thrive.

On episode Pain is a Four-Letter Word, Gupta, chief medical correspondent at CNN, talks with Green about how to treat a disease where the cause is unknown and each patient’s symptoms are unique. Green uses her expertise in pain medicine to discuss what causes chronic pain, how it can be treated and which patients are more likely to get care.

“Pain is like a thief in the night that has stolen the health and well-being of millions of Americans for far too long,” said Green. “It is a disease that deserves high quality care and research. People living with pain deserve to be to be treated with compassion and respect.”

Green’s health policy and research interests focus on pain, disparities, and the social determinants of health. She is also an expert in minority and women’s health, aging, and diversity in academic medicine.

She is also the Medical Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine, Bert Brodsky Chair and Professor at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. Her published articles focused on the “unequal burden of pain” shouldered by minorities and race-based disparities in hospital security calls and are considered foundational.
